Class
Participation:
Students should bring instruments, music/method book, accessories, agenda
and a pencil to class everyday. Each student starts the day with 100
points. Improper conduct = 20 points, No instrument or music = 20 points,
No accessories/pencil etc. = 5 points.
Students are to participate
everyday, even if they do not have a playable reed, an instrument or
music. They are expected to follow along, listen and remain in their
seat. They will NOT be allowed to do other homework. If you have an
illness that will hinder you from playing, the only way to be excused
from playing is through a note from a parent/guardian. You should still
bring your instrument and music to class so you can finger along. In
addition, students must have a note if their instrument is in the repair
shop. Under no circumstances should a student borrow another person's
instrument or reeds.
Practice and Homework
Expectations:
Students are expected to practice 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week. Students
are expected to complete written work on time.
Tests:
Playing and written tests will be given to review material from class
work. All students must score at least 90% on all tests. It you do not
score as well as you should on a test, you must retake the exam until
you score at least 90%. A baseball player who bats .500 is exceptional;
a professional musician who plays with 50% accuracy would be fired immediately.
Musicians must strive for as close to perfection as we can achieve.
The material must be learned and mastered, since each concept builds
on another. In music we strive for constant improvement and high quality.
Preparedness and improvement will be the criteria for all playing exams.
It is the student's responsibility
to make up missed tests or do retakes within two days.
Concerts:
Students attendance at all concerts is MANDATORY. This is a performance
elective and concerts are an important part of the curriculum. Transportation
problems should be discussed with the director ahead of time. Emergency
situations will be handled at the director's discretion. The concert
grade is based on behavior and overall performance. Failure to attend
and participate in a concert will result in the quarter grade being
dropped one letter grade.
Concert attire:
Sixth Grade Band - Khaki slacks, Band T Shirt and dark shoes
Seventh and Eight Grade Band - Khaki slacks, Band Polo shirt (navy with
emblem) and dark shoes
