Homework Policy

Holly Ridge Middle School

Rationale: The Holly Ridge Middle School Staff formulated a school homework policy to comply with the stipulations of School Board Policy 5510. "Homework" refers to school-related instruction that is to be completed by the students outside of school hours; it should fulfill the following purposes:

1. To enrich and extend school experiences through related home activities.
2. To reinforce learning by providing practice and application.
3. To stimulate effort, independence, responsibility, and self-direction.

Time: The school plan sets an optimal amount of time for homework. On any given school day, the amount of homework assigned should approximate the following times:

Sixth grade 80 minutes
Seventh grade 90 minutes
Eighth grade 100 minutes
For students in advanced classes and the AVID program, add 10 minutes.
