Yearbook Ads Available
Personal Eighth grade parents can now purchase personal ads for their students to be included in the HRMS 2012-2013 yearbook. CLICK HERE to download an order form. Rising 6th Grade Open House
We welcome all rising 6th grade families to Holly Ridge Middle for an open house. The goal of this event is to begin the process of a smooth and successful transition to middle school. We will begin at 7:00pm in the HRMS gym. We hope you will join us. Feel free to contact the front office at 577-1335 if you have any questions.

Holly Springs Arts Festival - Friday, April 12
Come out and support the young artistis, musicians, and dancers of Holly Springs on Friday, April 12. On Friday night at 7pm at Holly Grove Elementary School, a variety of Holly Ridge Middle students will be showcased including a small brass band, dancers, and displays of visual art from students.
5K Club Resumes
Students interested in joining the 5k club should CLICK HERE to download forms. The first 30 students who return all form to Ms. Hughes (jhughes2@wcpss.net) will be able to participate. Please contact Ms. Hughes with more information.
Spelling Bee Success
Congratulations to Ben Schwab on his recent success in the regional spelling bee. Ben finished 7th out of 91 students in Round 16 of the Spelling Bee. Great work, Ben!!

Holly Ridge Middle Announces Teacher of the Year!
Holly Ridge is proud to announce our Teacher of the Year for 2013-2014 -- Mr. Drew Daniel. Mr. Daniel is in his 4th year at Holly Ridge where he started his teaching career. Below are just a few of the ways students and parents describe Mr. Daniel:
- he is special because each and every day he succeeds to make science fun and interesting;
- Mr. Daniel truly loves his students and teaches to their individual needs;
- I am grateful that my child has finally got a teacher that inspires him to do better and to feel better about school in general; and,
- He believes in being there for his students, his coworkers, and most of all, for the betterment of Holly Ridge Middle School.

Science Fair Is Coming to Holly Ridge!
The Holly Ridge Middle School Science Fair will take place at HRMS on January 31 from 6-7pm. The event will include student displays and interactive science demonstrations. All are invited to celebrate an evening of science with our amazing Hornets!! Contact Ms. Jesrani (mjesrani@wcpss.net) for more information.
Students Raising Funds for Sandy Hook School
After the tragedy that took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, the Holly Ridge community has decided to come together again to help raise money for this cause. All three of the grade levels will be competing against each other to see who can raise the most money. The grade level with the most donations at the end of the week will earn the privilege of eating lunch outside during our next Early Release on February 15th. The winning grade level will eat lunch outside (weather permitting) and the remainder of the time students can participate in outdoor activities or socialize with friends!! So dig deep into your pockets and your hearts and bring your spare change to lunch on Wednesday, January 9th through Friday, January 11th. All donations collected will go directly to Sandy Hook Elementary School. While helping your grade level win, you will also be helping to heal the hearts of families who lost their loved ones. Volleyball Intramurals for Sixth Graders
Sixth grade girls who are interested in participating in the intramural volleyball program starting in February should complete the interest forms and return them to Coach Hughes in room 507. CLICK HERE for the forms and for more information.
Reproductive Health & Safety Unit in Healthful Living
During the 2nd semester of the school year, 7th and 8th grade students will be participating in the Reproductive Health & Safety unit as a part of their Healthful Living class. Parents are encouraged to contact their child's Healthful Living teacher if they have questions, if they would like to review the curriculum ahead of time, or if they would like to request that their child not participate in this unit of study. Attention 8th Graders!
The Wake County Public School System is conducting a short (5 minute) confidential survey of athletic interests in our high schools. We encourage 8th grade students to provide their input on current athletic offerings and what we might offer in the future. You do not need to be a current participant in athletics to respond. To access the survey, go to our school’s website and click on WCPSS Sports Interest Survey. Please respond by December 21st.

"Drugs Uncovered" Presentation Comes to HRMS
HRMS PTA and the Poe Center will offer a free educational presentation for parents on November 29 from 6:30 to 8:30pm in the HRMS auditorium. The "Drugs Uncovered" presentation provides parents with an insight into common drugs, drug references, teen culture, substance use and abuse. Holly Springs High Hosts Open House

Lacrosse Intramurals Program Starting November 27
Each year HRMS offers an intramurals program for students interested in additional, fun athletic competition. These programs are open on a first come, first serve basis. Lacrosse will begin after the Thanksgiving Break on Tuesday, November 27. CLICK HERE for the informational packet and permission forms. Holly Ridge Starts Penny Wars to Support Hurricane Sandy Victims
After the recent events of Hurricane Sandy are you feeling like you want to do something in order to help the people that lost everything in the storm? If so, Holly Ridge is hosting their first ever Penny War to help raise money to aid the hurricane relief! The three teams that will be competing in the Penny War are NC State, UNC, and Duke. Show pride for your favorite North Carolina team while helping the victims of Hurricane Sandy. Bring in your spare change during lunch on Wednesday, November 7th – Friday, November 9th and help your favorite team earn the bragging rights of being the most popular team in the school! All donations collected throughout the next three days will go directly to the American Red Cross. While showing support for your team you will also be supporting the relief efforts of the devastating storm. If you have any questions please contact Mrs. Stanley in Room 417.
Election Day - November 6
Please remember that Holly Ridge Middle will be an election polling site on Tuesday, November 6. HRMS will have a teacher workday on November 6. While our office will be open, parents who need HRMS staff are encouraged to call or email and avoid the crowds

Make a nomination for the HRMS Teacher of the Year!
We invite parents, staff, and students to join us in nominating the Holly Ridge Middle School Teacher of the Year for 2013-2014. Nominations are accepted both on paper forms and using this online nomination form. CLICK HERE to submit a noination. All nominations should be submited by Friday, Oct. 12.
Lockdown Drill Planned for October 2
Holly Ridge and the WCPSS Board of Education believe that it is important for all students and school staff members to practice procedures for emergencies. HRMS students and staff will practice procedures for lockdown on Tuesday, October 2. CLICK HERE for a copy of the letter that will be coming home with students on October 1.
"Pastries with Pittman"
On Wednesday, October 24 at 8:30am, the PTA will host "Pastries with Pittman." Several times per year, we have this event as a way to promote open communication with the school. Please come out and join us.
Science Fair Preparation Night
On Monday, October 22, the PTA will host a science fair night to help students prepare for the upcoming science fair in January. The event will begin at 6:30pm in the HRMS Media Center. This will be working session where students can get ideas, get help with building the plan for their project, or get advice on what judges will be looking for. For more information, contact your science teacher!
8th Graders to Participate in EXPLORE Testing
For the first time, all 8th graders will have the opportunity to take the EXPLORE test to help guide their high school course selections and next steps on their educational path. The EXPLORE test is an exam like the PSAT but created and administered by the same group that makes the ACT test (which is now being administered by the high school). Holly Ridge will administer the test on October 19 to all 8th graders. An information handout will be sent home with 8th graders on Friday, Sept. 28 and we will schedule a follow up session with parents to review and explain scores once we get them back. Reflections Contest for 2012 Begins!
The 2012 Reflections contest is beginning. This is an amazing program for students to discover amazing new talents within the arts! The theme of this year is "The Magic of a Moment." CLICK HERE for more information

Bullying Prevention at Holly Ridge - This Thursday, Sept. 27
During the month of September, Holly Ridge is focused on informing students about bullying prevention. Specifically, we want all students to know how they can respond appropriately to a bully and how to access resources available to assist them. Students are encouraged to use our Bullying Hotline to report anything that makes them not feel happy, healthy, and safe at HRMS.
Also, parents and students are encouraged to attend our Bullying Awareness presentation for parents on Thursday, September 27 at 6:30pm. HRMS in conjunction with Holly Springs PD will present both information and resources related to bullying prevention.

Parent Math Nights for Sixth Grade Parents
On Saturday, September 22 and Monday, September 24, sixth grade parents are invited to attend our Parent Math Night! Parents will be given a quick over view of topics covered in math courses in the first quarter and also will be given the opportunity to practice the math as well. We have found in the past that parents who attended these events felt much more comfortable helping students with content. CLICK HERE for more information or to sign up to attend.
5K Club Starts Practicing for October Run
CLICK HERE to download information and forms on the 5K Club that will begin training in September for a 5K run in October. This opportunity is open to the first 30 students who bring completed forms to Coach Hughes (jhughes2@wcpss.net). Feel free to contact Ms. Hughes with questions.
Bus Route Changes for Holly Ridge Middle
Starting on Tuesday, September 4, Holly Ridge Middle routes 1, 2, and 3 will change. Route 21(a new route) will be created with students from these three routes. CLICK HERE to view a letter from WCPSS Transportation regarding the routes. Copies of the new routes were sent home with students on Friday.
