Student/Parent Access Network (SPAN)

The Student/Parent Access Network (SPAN) is an online system that can be used by parents to monitor student progress and data. It provides access to online progress reports for grades, for attendance, discipline, and other vital information.

Getting Access: SPAN Accounts

To access SPAN, parent should visit this link: http://span.wcpss.net

All students will be given their usernames and passwords during the first week of school. To set up a parent account, parents must completed one of the two forms linked below:

It generally takes about 5-10 school days for the account to be processed. You will get an automated email when the account has been activated. Depending on what your email settings are, if you do not see the email within this time period you may want to check your junk mail folder.

CLICK HERE to download directions on how to access SPAN once you receive your password. Remember that passwords are case sensitive!!!

FAQ's When Working with SPAN

Q: My child's progress report says they have a "0/F" for one of their classes. Does this mean they are failing?

Usually this just means that there are either (1) no grades entered for that class, or (2) there is a technical problem with the posting. Email the teacher if you see this and we can correct it. It is likely nothing to worry about with regard to your grade.

Q: Are unreceived and yet-to-be recorded assignments calculated as a zero in the average?

It depends on how the gradebook is set up, but many times - yes! For this reason, SPAN is not a good place for an exact average in the class. Rather it gives a student a great idea of where they stand, reports grades to parents, and shows what is missing. If you think that the average may be a little off, email the teacher directly and ask about it.

Q: Is it possible to be locked out of my account?

Usually the answer is ... Yes. After three unsuccessful tries to log in, it will lock your account in order to protect the student information. There is a "Technical Support" option on the website. It will allow you to submit a request to have your password reset. This usually should happen within a day.

Unfortunately, at the moment the Technical Support button does not work. We've reported this issue to the county. In the meantime, please email Ms. Jones at ncwise450@wcpss.net.

Q: When I look at my child's grades from elementary school, it says "Self Contained." What does this mean?

This does not mean that you child was in a self-contained special education classroom. All elementary classes show as self-contained. While this information shows as background data on SPAN, it is not part of their high school transcript or anything else that will be reported about their progress at any time.

Q: My question is not listed here. What should I do?

Email Mr. Pittman at bpittman@wcpss.net. He can get you an answer and also post it here if appropriate.
